Larry Kim, MPH, Founder and CEO

Larry L. Kim, MPH was born and raised in Northern Virginia, just 15 minutes outside of Washington, DC. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health Education in 2010 from James Madison University, he entered the University of Virginia where he received his Master in Public Health in 2012. Between 2012 and 2013 he was a Sheikh Zayed Scholar at the Shiekh Zayed Institue for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, a position he left in the summer of 2013 when he moved to Colorado to start TeamLYD.

Long before his academic and professional endeavors, Larry’s introduction to the field of health care occurred when he was (unexpectedly) cast into the role of patient at the age of seventeen. Previously a vision of health, he collapsed at his family home just two weeks before he was to start college. He was diagnosed with medication-induced acute liver failure, placed in a medical coma, and flown emergently to an academic hospital with a transplant center. Despite being advised by his physicians that survival without a new liver was unlikely, his family declined a transplant, fearing the long-term burdens faced by many transplant patients. To his physicians’ surprise, his markers of liver function began to improve, and his medical coma was lifted.

Before long Larry was back home in Virginia, but more obstacles lay ahead. He endured several re-hospitalizations as he recovered from his injury, and suffered complications from a long course of high-dose steroids used to protect his liver. Several months after the start of his ordeal, his health again declined, and at this time he was found to have Type-1 Diabetes.

Today, Larry has made a full recovery despite the overwhelming odds against him. In spite of countless hospitalizations, Larry managed to graduate early and with honors from James Madison University and the University of Virginia. He has received local, corporate and national recognition for his work in innovation, public health and diabetes education. His personal mantra, “live your dream” has become synonymous with his efforts to make a difference in the lives of others. For Larry, “live your dream” is not just a phrase; it’s a way of life!
